Biography of Martin Luther

Early Life and Education

Martin Luther, the great German reformer, felt a strong inner need for true righteousness, which he could not achieve through penances, monasticism, or sacrifices.

He studied at the University of Erfurt and in , he received a master's degree in arts. At the insistence of his father, he began to pursue a career as a lawyer. However, while walking from Mansfeld to Erfurt, he was caught in a thunderstorm that made him fall to the ground.

He exclaimed, "Saint Anne, help me, and I will become a monk." Luther later regretted this vow but felt bound to it. He joined the order of monks and began to live an ascetic life to please God.
