    At this point Melville has published "Mardi," which must be an extraordinarily strange fictional narrative - or rambling - or whatever it is.

    Up to this point, Robertson-Lorant has rendered a highly engaging and plausible portrait of Melville.

    She writes in her preface that her intention was to convey the events of his life and career, his experiences of himself as he grew and changed, his responses to his world.

    I would say that she's succeeding admirably - as well as any reasonable person might expect.

    I do object, however, to certain of her bald assertions regarding Melville's characteristics without so much as a nod to rules of evidence.

    So out of the blue,for example, without presentation of any facts whatsoever, she asserts Melville's "essential bisexuality." First of all what kind of orientation is that - as opposed to inessential bisexuality perhaps? She doesn't say.
